Kier Stoke apprentices help important community project - Monday update

This National Apprenticeship Week Kier Stoke apprentices are working on a project to breathe a new lease of life into Stoke Minster, one of the Stoke-on-Trent’s most important civic buildings.

The project, to refurbish the Minster’s kitchens for commercial use, came about after volunteers at Stoke Minster approached Stoke City FC Community Trust, who Kier Stoke works with on a number of community-based initiatives, for help.

The Trust was pleased to give the Minster a grant. But in order to get the building work completed they called on the Kier Stoke team, who are completing the renovation free of charge, with the kitchen units kindly donated by Richmond Cabinets.

The work is being carried out by Kier Stoke joinery apprentices Jordan Ryan, Kyle Sherratt, Mike Standaloft-Gibbons and Jack Rowley, who have been given time off from their studies at Stoke-on-Trent College to help on the project.

Monday update:

The build has got off to a good start today with a number of the units removed and replaced and the new raised flooring down.

Apprentice Jordan Ryan has enjoyed getting tuition from fully-qualified Kier Stoke joiners Tim Ratcliffe and Andy Glover.

He commented: “Most of my work takes place in newly plastered rooms, but here I’ve had to measure and fix the unit and work tops to the run of the Stoke Minster walls, which are 400 years old!”

Come back tomorrow when we’re expecting news of a surprise guest to the project!
